Her first icon - Vivekananda!

Don't ask me why!

Oh well, wait. I may know actually.

Every other icon commonly known would be known by their words, no? Which makes it difficult for someone who's just learning to walk and is yet to start speaking..

Vivekananda, on the other hand, made it easy for her, with just his pose to stand (walk) for!

Boomerang!! Behind the scenes...

There have been moments. There've been a hellva lot of moments. They'd say much more than what you can hear when you just watch the film "Boomerang". Which, just in case you haven't already, you must do. Right away. Here:

However, this post is to share a favourite among the captured moments that, of course, never made its way to the film.

Why? See for yourself!

Heart-melt moments - 1

- Mum, amake nie jao.

She does it often; crawls her way from the bed to the dressing table top and jitters to come back alone given the gap between the two pieces of furniture that had once trapped her little feet.

I, as is usual, had other priorities, sitting crosslegged with a book and a tea cup, the quilt pulled upto my bosom.

Blogger's Block 1

After 50+ posts in a reasonably short while, I guess I have earned my right to it.

Or is it that it doesn't look quite alright if I keep on writing such crap and never ever have phenomenons that writers are generally supposed to have. That puts my trust on myself, as a could-be-may-be-ah-someday writer, in serious doubt.

But worse, I cannot decide which of the above is what it is.

Nevertheless, here's a dedication to it anyway.

PS: I cannot really guarantee that I'll be away for too long, though!

PPS: But why am I even apologising? Isn't this, well, my own blog?

See! See! My Mum is hot!

Bubble-burst

Drum sounds rise on the air, and with them, my heart. A voice inside the beat says, I know you are tired, but come. This is the way.

—Rumi

Musings... 2

A hope of belief,
A belief in the Self.

A dream of rising
Like the Sun on the cliff.

World, that has killed the mind,
Eyes, that still look up,

What, pray, is Love, forbidden?
What's a deed, if undone!

My unfair demands

What I need in you is neither passion nor compassion. I need in you a sea of curiosity. A curiosity to search and to find me, the whole of me. To excavate my mind, like a man frantically searching for a long-buried treasure known to exist only in myth. To ask, demand and extort every fine details, that I may forget, deny, defy or not even know. To seek all the problems of my life, and to spend your whole life solving them for me.

You may need to rob my body, as not all words can be spoken out. You may need to invade my mind ruthlessly, causing me to revive the trauma I should rather overcome. But at the end of it, we will tall stand two souls - blissful, naked and brazen - facing each other and holding our faces up to the sky, saying -

And thus we lived our times!

Homeward bound

And I didn't know how a home awaited me all this while.

First Sit-n-Draw..

26th Jan '13. Dhopash was a year and ten months old then, and the youngest in the lot.

Looking back at it now, I think -

1. It was the first time I realized she is ambidextrous.
2. She finished her painting, see!
3. She had an eye on competition too, it seems. :D
4. She picked up her own stuff at the end.
5. I am hooked to her!

First day at school

That was her  first day at school, and so they got me to accompany her and stay around so that she is not uncomfortable. Looking back, I wonder if she needed that at all.

1. There, she arrived, trotting and swaying in excitement.

Random things I dislike

This has also been published in World of Moms!

What I’ve learnt from the unsaid actions of established veteran bloggers I know is that when you run out of ideas or have a blogger’s block (if that’s legitimate), you make lists. As I’d always have been, I have more things to crib about than to smile at. No, not always, I was a better person as a child. Nevertheless, now. And so, I set out.

1.     Hierarchical baritone

This is serious. I passionately dislike, even hate, people who you can just overhear making a telephonic conversation and you can guess, cent percent, if he or she is talking to someone junior or senior in the social or professional strata. Argh, haven’t your parents taught you manners?

2.     “Oh, so you are a feminist?”

Yes, I fucking am. Very much. And if you are not, you might want to check out its meaning first.

3.     “Don’t talk to me about your kid” people

Don’t talk to me at all, then! Ok, 1..2..3.. calmed down. Let me explain. I talking about something I’m excited about should not mean peer pressure for you. Just like you telling me about your last LBD does not mean I will rush to buy one or sit, sigh and crib. It’s yours, tell me more, very nice, thank you. That’s mine, the kid, I will tell you as much as I think I should, be nice, thank you. Else, let’s catch up sometime else when I have grown over her. If, ever, at all.

4.     “Don’t tell me you’re a working Mom” people

Same reason as above. You tell me your recipes, I tell you my office canteen menu, finish. Else, again, let’s catch up later on, thank you.

PS: Oh wait. No I am neither a single Mom, nor is it because my household won’t run without my paycheck. It because, I am, I fucking am, this way. And, proud to be, that too.

PPS: If you have any concerns about how well my kid is growing up, check it out for yourself. Here!

5.     Socialites.

Because I envy them. Period.

Story - "Conflict and Resolution" exercise

Here is the third of the three. Third, fourth and fifth, of the five, actually.

In this, the exercises were as follows:

A - Develop a character of your choice. Just describe her.

B - Look at the person from his/ her lover's perspective

C - Develop a conflict/ problem situation and resolve it, with humour as the premise.

Here is what I sketched -

(more to come...)

Writing Workshop - Ex. 2

This was another exercise, in which we were shown a random picture from a newspaper cutting and told to write a story in a maximum of 10 sentences.

The catches were:
- You cannot lift you pen and stop to think It's "speed" writing.
- It needs to be inspired by the picture we were shown.

The picture was of few young, dark kids in their school uniform.

Here is what I could come up with -

She was fortunate, she thought to herself.

She was fortunate that she could go to school.

Her mother had told her that she slept on the footpath and begged at the traffic signal when she was her age.

She can at least go to school!

But then, she had also overheard faint bits of the conversation her parents were having last night.

They said she could go to school, but only as long as her father does not find a suitable groom.

He has been searching for a match for her for sometime now, and is aware that she is growing up fast.

Next summer she will be fourteen.

Which meant, she would never study enough to become a teacher that she always wanted to  be.

However, she was still fortunate that she could at least go to school, she reminded herself once again.

Writing workshop - Ex. 1

Okay, so here is what the exercise was. We had to pick up one or a couple of kitchen items of our choice, from what was available in the kitchen of the house where we were having this game. We then had to write a story, of 3 sentences (no more or no less), using these items as components in the story.

I chose cups and coffee maker.

And here is what I had written -

It was yet another morning.

He walked into the kitchen, picked up the blue coffee mug and filled it up with filter coffee, whistling a tune to himself all the while.

The pick mug lay there, desolate and dusty; it has been left behind, unused, ever since the day she packed her bags and left her home for good.

Withdrawal Symptoms

I have known withdrawal symptoms. I have known them more than I have ever known any other emotion, I think. Yes, love inclusive.

It's difficult to explain what it is like. And of course I do not know any of the medical terms. I never even saw a doctor. But, let me try.

Have you ever jumped off a cliff? I did. And I did not know swimming, which meant that I was scared, very scared. But I wanted to do it, nevertheless.

The point is, you start with being scared. You're scared for your life. There is a moment of consciousness, and a moment of decision-making follows. Do you want to, at all? And then, you take the plunge.

Though you know the decision has been made and you've left behind the other track, a sense of fear still lingers for those few early moments, even as you dive. You still feel conscious of the possible consequences, and of the rationality that you had been weighing out only seconds back. But then, soon enough, this consciousness trails off. It is not overtaken, it just leaves. Evacuates. Leaving behind a numbness that is like never before. You feel the emptiness. Or rather, you do not. You cannot make up your mind on how, exactly, you are feeling. You try to grope a sense of Space and Time, but you cannot; and therefore, you let go. You sink, you float, you lose, and eventually you let go. There is a strange peace to it - in this act of letting go; in this realization of having let gone. Yes, even if you did not really intend to let go.

Oh, I started off to discuss withdrawal. Did I digress? I don't know!

The feeling isn't quite the same, but for the void.

Withdrawal symptoms, as I have felt it, do not mark their presence when they just arrive. They silently creep in. They silently spread their roots. It is only until the roots were deep and strong as to feel a pull every time you'd try to behave otherwise will you ever notice them. And then you realise. You realise how you had fed and nurtured them for some time already, without you knowing about it all.

Let me try to recollect how it all begins.

Well, the conversations would no longer be sweet and easy. It would typically have two of you at two ends and not at a merge. It could lead to bruises and wounds if the pull continued; and so you let go your side of the rope. You realize it's wise, at least, even if it is not right. But right to whom? And, didn't they say peace came first?
So you let go conversations. You do not talk.

Unless in groups. Unless your groceries need to be stocked. Unless the bank called for some documents. Unless your child's fees are due. And never, otherwise.

Then come materials. True, love should not have anything to do with them. But then it does, doesn't it?

The gifts would not be liked. The choice of items would feel low on warmth. The things would never mean special any longer. Would never look like any thoughts went behind them. The price tags will be flaunted over their meaning. And then, you ask the other – why not choose your own thing? And then, why even buy? Who cares to!

There, you let go giving. You do not give. You do not take. You do not use them. Never again.

Though at lonely moments, you faintly remember those first gifts out of the first salaries. That suit length that always seemed beyond reach, bought. Those pens that were got from rich relatives and then went missing from the house ("Ma, I don't remember where I lost them.") That first book of poetry by your favourite poet. Sigh.

Dinner time. Music time. Television time. You let go the togetherness one by one.

Movies - only if it's a theatre visit. And only if both of you want it badly. Else, one wouldn't give in for the other and agree just to accompany. And, the other would've stopped asking anyway. Long back.

The clothes that were once packed in one big suitcase every time there was a trip, would now have grown in range, number and colours. They would have their own space in their individual, separate luggage. They would now be carried by their individual owners when they needed to be. They, however, need to be carried in suitcases much less frequently than before.

The two toothbrushes that shared their stands one beside the other would now have been moved to separate washrooms. Why not, if you have separate ones.

And there you go. Separate soap cases, separate toothpastes, separate bottles of shampoo, separate loofahs. You don't smell the other's lingering presence when you go for a bath any longer.

You don't miss it either.

It continues. It spreads. It roots. It reaches every corner of the space you live in, and every moment that you live. It does not announce; it does not dominate; it stealthily captures your life.

You do not even realize until it makes its presence strong enough. Even when it does, the feeling of righteousness overtakes the feeling of loss. You look back, realize, and defend everything you have done to help it spread and grow. You don't love its presence, but you wouldn't ask it away either.

You ask yourself - what really do you need in your life, pray? The question is however not meant for a real answer. You are not open to a real answer any longer. The question is meant for what you want to tell yourself, now that you are here.

And so you tell yourself. You tell yourself that you, of course, need food, clothes and shelter; and medicines. You need to pay off your EMI's for the house you bought. You need to provide for your child's education. You need a corpse when you retire. You need to support your parents even though they don't let you. And so you need a job that gives you money. Oh, and that helps you pass the day. You have whole goddamn twenty-four hours to pass each day, every day!

And thus is life.

And thus would be life.

Until, something happens.

Trust me, something will happen. It has to.

They call it “life” after all!

Just Friends - I

Our first PTM!

This article has also been published in Women's WebWorld of Moms! and a magazine.

I was ready to take the blame. I was ready to own it all up, before they would even start. In my wild imagination, I even pictured myself joining my hands as I would tell them all about it; but of course, better sense prevailed.

It was our first ever Parent Teacher Meeting, PTM as they call it these days. I was, to say the least, nervous.

It should not have been our first, which is, well, the first blow I was expecting.

- We need to talk about this, না রে?

The Desert

It was just another fine morning, and she had woken up to the sunshine across the glass door and the smell of warm tea, just as she did every day. But soon as she stepped out of her bed, something strange happened. Things around her started disappearing one by one. The glass doors darkened, the walls silently crumbled down, the smell and sounds were all gone, and the floor below her feet suddenly turned coarse. She looked around, and the world around her seemed to slowly dissolve and evaporate right in front of her own eyes. It seemed that what she saw just minutes earlier, and every day before that, were all a mirage. Is this some sort of a temporary insanity? Is this what they call hallucination? Or is this, she thought helplessly, what it is going to be, always?

In fact I even tried that, কিন্তু পারিনি।
