The Ice Breaker!

Here is what I presented for my very first speech in the Competent Communications journey!

Who am I!!! Now, that does not really sound like an easy question to me. Am I an Actuary first, or a mother; a wife, or a daughter? Maybe I want to become a writer someday, or do I want to become a painter? Do I even know what I am or what I want to become?

However, for now, let me leave these introspections behind, and put in front of you a brief overview of myself.

I was born and brought up in Kolkata. I think I have all the virtues and all the vices of a Bengali. And, I assure you, I speak terrible Hindi! I am very talkative. But at the same time, I am hopelessly introverted. Parties are nightmares! I love churches, and rains! I always save the yolk of the egg till the end of the meal. I am pretty good at making reasons, and terribly bad at making decisions.

Now, let’s cover a little bit on my background. - blah! blah! blah! blah!

(In this portion, I essentially provided a brief overview of my upbringing, my family composition and members, my birthplace, schools, colleges, my nature as a child, as a student, and my early aspirations in life.)

I then step into the next stage of my life – my life, as an Actuary. Well, what do actuaries do? In quotes – “They make financial sense of the future!” In layman terms, actuaries are responsible for the Risk and Liability side in a financial business. In India, we mostly work in Insurance and in Consultancy firms. In my career, I have worked in designing, pricing and valuation of insurance products. Oh, and we study to clear exams. I have completed my qualification as an Associate Actuary from the Institute of Actuaries of India, and the Institute of Actuaries, UK, and I am one paper shy of Fellowship.

Now, let me shift gear and bring you back to the personal front of my life.

I had my first boyfriend when I was eighteen. Going by how much we fought, I thought we wouldn’t last even seven months. Seven years later, we married each other. And eight years after that, you know what? We are still together!  And, in fact, we even made a baby four years back!! We call her Roopkatha. It means – a fairytale.

Next, I wanted to talk about my daughter. And then if I do that, I assure you, I will not be able to finish my speech on time. So, let me keep her for another session, and wrap this speech up with just a small example of her.

This was a couple of years back, and she was about two years old. We were at the crowded airport lounge, waiting for the boarding call. I had been keeping unwell, and she was running about recklessly so that it was difficult for me to catch her. I tried the emotional blackmail route. “Why don’t you keep calm? Can’t you see that Mum has fever?” – I take her hand and hold it against my forehead. Next minute, she is all over the place, running at double the speed, pointing at me, blurting out at the top of her voice – “Look here, look here:  my Mum is hot, my Mum is hot!”

Project 1 - The Ice Breaker
For your first speech project, you will introduce yourself to your fellow club members and give them some information about your background, interests, and ambitions. Practice giving your speech to friends or family members, and strive to make eye contact with some of your audience. You may use notes during your speech if you wish. Read the entire project before preparing your talk.
Time:4 - 6 minutes
Objectives: • To begin speaking before an audience.
 • To discover speaking skills you already have and skills that need some attention
 • To introduce yourself to your fellow club members
